Science for Australians series

Science policy feature articles, 2020-2021

The Australian Academy of Science’s policy initiative, Science for Australians, is designed to illustrate the benefits of science to the public and policy makers.

Science for Australians features a series of articles written for the public by leading scientific experts. The features are designed to provoke discussion, particularly amongst policy makers, demonstrating the research and ideas that can lead to stronger science-policy development and implementation.

My role was to edit and publish most of these features, either as lead editor or contributing to the work as part of the team. I worked closely with science policy experts to help shape the content and ensure it met the aims of the Academy’s policy team and the external authors. I also worked with graphic designers to develop many of the custom infographics and illustrations.

I worked with web designers to format the features on the Academy’s website, working within the limitations of the legacy CMS, which involved complex workarounds and working directly with source code in HTML.

I produced a comprehensive ‘How To’ guide so that other team members were able to upload these feature articles even if their knowledge of HTML was only very basic.
